Sector Overview: Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs)

The image and even the mythology of road transport is inextricably linked to the largest and heaviest vehicles on the road - hardly surprising given their size and visibility relative to other vehicles. But in terms of production and sales, large commercial vehicles (CVs) are far outnumbered by smaller vehicles, and consequently, their economic importance to the global motor industry is not as great as it is for smaller vehicles. John Kendall looks at the light commercial vehicle (LCV) sector.

These smaller vehicles are known by a series of names - vans, cargo vans and light commercial vehicles (LCVs), to pick out a few.

In itself, that causes a problem to start with. LCV means different things in different parts of the world, since there is no agreed global definition of size or weight. We focus on vehicles weighing less than 3,500kg (7,716lb) GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight), the loose definition adopted in the European Union. In EU terms, these vehicles are defined as licence category B, under Directive 91/439/EEC, Article 3. just-auto shall adopt this weight since it will cover the majority of vehicle types recognised as LCVs around the world.

Body types include microvans, car-derived vans (CDVs), which are effectively passenger cars converted to carry light loads, purpose-built vans, chassis and double-cab variants of these, designed to accommodate varying types of bodywork such as dropside, tipper, car transporter and box van, as well as pickup trucks.

As has been indicated, LCVs are to an extent, defined by national driver licensing requirements. Across the European Union for instance, the 3,500kg GVW limit is the maximum weight of vehicle that new drivers are permitted to drive.

They may also be defined in other ways by national and international trade bodies. France, as an example, tends to classify LCVs as those below 5,000kg (11,023lb) GVW in statistics compiled by the Comite des Constructeurs Francais d'Automobiles (CCFA). The same definition is used in some production statistics compiled by OICA (Organisation Internationale Des Constructeurs D'automobiles). Unfortunately, OICA is not consistent and some figures record LCVs as those below 6 tons (6,096kg) GVW.

While the EU-wide licence categories offer a fairly clear definition of an LCV, the current licence categories for vehicles were instituted in 1997 and many member states still permit drivers licensed before that date to drive vehicles in heavier weight categories ('grandfather rights'). Consequently, it will be many years yet before all car licence holders are restricted from driving commercial vehicles without taking additional driving tests. This still influences vehicle-purchasing behaviour in those countries and is likely to do so for some time to come.

Generally, the US takes a more liberal attitude to car licence holders. In many US States, holders of category C licences - the licence held by many car drivers - permit them to drive vehicles up to 26,000lb (11,793kg) GVW. There is some degree of variation, State-to-State, but overall this is a widely agreed limit. Not surprisingly, US cargo vans can be heavier than our self-imposed 3,500kg GVW limit, so this report exercises some flexibility in the definition when dealing with the US. Sectors such as the low cab forward (LCF) market in the US could be seen in the same light as the LCV sector in other parts of the world. LCF models are generally heavier than 3,500kg GVW, but some discussion of them in this report is justified in the overall context of the US light vehicle market.

It is also true to say that many European models within the 3,500kg GVW limit are also produced at heavier weights, satisfying the limited demand for such vehicles that can still be driven by older passenger car licence holders.

Market overview

Since many LCV models share driveline and body components with volume passenger car models, it naturally follows that the dominant global passenger car manufacturers are also the leading LCV players. At one time, many more models were based on passenger cars than is the case today, but Europe has seen a reverse trend in recent years, where passenger car versions of LCV models have become more popular, as LCV chassis dynamics, comfort, and noise levels have made a marked improvement. Such models used to be popular primarily in France, Spain and Italy, where the family car also doubled as business transport, but now their market appeal has spread north across Europe as these models have moved upmarket.

Global market players include DaimlerChrysler, Fiat, Ford, General Motors, Hyundai/Kia, PSA, Renault/Nissan, Toyota and Volkswagen, who all produce LCV ranges. In addition to these, there are many other specialist manufacturers satisfying the needs of their local markets.

In the fast moving Chinese market, Zhanjiang Kingstar Vehicle Trading Co of Guangdong province is one of the leading producers, with a product range partly based on Toyota panel vans and pickups. Other co-operative ventures are also in place to produce European and Japanese models in China.

Hyundai/Kia is the dominant player in Korea and like some Japanese producers, builds a specific model for the European market. In India, the Tata Group is the leading LCV producer with a model range based partly on old Mercedes-Benz models. We will consider individual manufacturers in a later section.

In general terms, LCV products can be split into a number of categories by size and weight. Some are specific to certain markets, although continuing rationalisation and globalisation is producing a more uniform global pattern.

Key trends: 1. Japanese OEMs' role in Europe to increase in importance

The European LCV market is relatively robust, and does not see the same cyclical demand patterns as witnessed with either passenger car or heavy commercial vehicles. This stability is of benefit to those suppliers with forward investment decisions to make, but, conversely, it renders the marketplace quite static in comparison with other sectors. just-auto regards the Japanese OEMs as likely to play an increasingly important role within Europe, and would point to Toyota as being the manufacturer most poised to benefit from this trend.

Key trends: 2. Consumer confidence will be key factor for NAFTA's lifestyle sector

NAFTA has seen a marked substitution effect at work, with traditional car buyers now opting for one of the growing number of lifestyle-designed LCVs. The development of this lifestyle sector is - numerically - a good thing, but, at another level, it renders the genre liable to peaks and troughs in consumer as well as business demand. Whilst we accept that these two are linked, the increasing 'consumerisation' of the LCV market in NAFTA may prove to be a double-edged sword; rising interest rates and falling consumer confidence may well serve to take the shine off what is otherwise a buoyant market sector.

Key trends: 3. Diesel growth will be more significant than alternative fuels

NAFTA is also likely to witness a growing interest in diesel powered LCVs. The recently renewed CAFE requirements will make large capacity gasoline engines a difficult legislative pitch, and just-auto regards the growth of diesel as being of far greater significance than that of alternative fuels during the life of this report. This may well serve the interests of the Japanese OEMs - already a reckonable force in North America - and may well cause the indigenous OEMs to play a game of catch up.

Key trends: 4. China's growth to slow but its - and India's - exports to grow

just-auto's views of the emerging markets are perhaps unfashionable. We view the Chinese market with some concern; on the one hand, IP and fiscal issues make China a difficult place in which to do business. On the other, it seems unlikely that the levels of growth witnessed to date can be sustained over the long term. The Indian market seems to have developed further than that in China, and we expect to see the development of a global player - in Tata - over the life of this report. Both China and India boast a domestic vehicle sector, and we regard an export driven approach from both markets as being a safe bet. Latin America is developing a regional self-sufficiency in terms of vehicle production, driven in part by long-term investments on the part of European OEMs. This is a trend that we expect to see remaining constant, although the sourcing of LCV components from Mercosur on the part of European OEMs would seem an entirely logical move.

Key trends 5: Quality of local fuel supplies may be key to emerging markets' OEMs' success

Perhaps key to the development of the emerging markets is the availability of a high quality fuel supply. There is little benefit to be gained by existing emerged market OEMs producing products that are inappropriate for the fuel supply available to the end user in the emerging markets. The costs implicit in desulphurising the global fuel supply are huge, and just-auto remains unconvinced that refinery capacity in high growth areas such as China will be sufficient to allow for this program to occur without hiccups. If the emerged markets-based OEMs continue to produce a variety of different engines for different markets, there will surely be a large strain placed upon their resources, resulting in a shift back to the existing OEMs - such as Tata and FAW - both of which may prove better placed to serve demand from the emerging markets.

Police Auctions

It is surprisingly common for federal, state and local governments, as well as banks and other lending institutions to find themselves in possession of automobiles and other motor vehicles, boats, land, real estate and other property. In the case of government this occurs because property is confiscated from criminals, or in some cases, from people who default on their taxes. In the case of banks and financial institutions, the situation usually arises because a debtor is unable to keep on their payments, and hence the lender repossesses the property.

Additionally, government agencies, for example the police, often have fleets of vehicles. These vehicles are periodically retired and replacement by newer models, and hence the question of what to do with the retired vehicles arises.

Neither government, nor banks, usually have much interest in continuing to own these vehicles, whether they are confiscated or seized, repossessed, or simply retired. Additionally, vehicles are expensive to store, and do of course depreciate in value over time. Quick sale, often achieved by auctioning these vehicles to the public, is therefore often in the government's or bank's best interest.

Vehicle auctions of these types may include automobiles, SUVs, vans, trucks and even motorcycles. If you spend some time investigating these auctions, you might be surprised at the bargains that you can find! Seized cars can of course be of pretty much any make or model, and will vary widely in condition - so be sure to know what you're bidding on! Don't dismiss, retired ex-government service vehicles, as these can sometimes represent very good value - they may have clocked up a lot of miles, but they are usually well maintained, and often have full service records too.

Electric Vehicle Plans - Start Your DIY Electric Car Conversion With Proper Guides

If you are an electric car enthusiast, you will be considering retrofitting your gasoline driven gas car into an electric vehicle on your own. Before you do so, it is recommended for you to get some electric vehicle plans. You do not want to start a DIY electric conversion project without a road map. Generally, an electric vehicle blueprint will show you the entire electric connection diagram.

In an electric car retrofitting process, what we are doing is to remove the internal combustion engine and all its associated components such as gas tank, radiator, fuel pump and fuel distribution lines and replacing them with a DC electric motor and batteries. You will need a minimum of 20 batteries to supply the power needed for the electric motor. The existing drive train such as the transmission, clutch system and drive shaft can still be utilized. One thing you have to figure out is how to place all the batteries pack. Most probably you have to construct a custom metal rack to hold the batteries in place.

An electric car with a full charge is capable of traveling about 150 miles. The actual mileage will depend on the weight of the car, the driving condition, the speed of the car and also the condition of the batteries. If you were to install more batteries, you would extend the mileage of the electric vehicle. However, additional batteries will add more dead weight on the car thus affecting its breaking and steering system. It is a good idea to go for a balanced system.

If you are not familiar with automotive engineering, all the information above may not make any sense to you. In this case, if you still want to enjoy the benefits of an electric car, you can send it to a mechanic to be retrofitted. What you should do is to understand some basic knowledge of the conversion process. This is to safeguard you from being charge for unnecessary parts and work done. There are many electric car conversion guides that you can purchase from the internet.

Guru Cracks Code on How to Save Money on Gasoline

The gas prices are out of this world! Many families cant afford last years gas prices and now with gas prices exceeding 5.00 in many cities families are forced to cut back and live frugal. There is hardly any cities left that have gas prices for less than 4.00 a gallon. It costs Americans tons of money to fill up there economy cars.

What can be done to save money on gasoline now? There's no immediate simple answer to address this. One method to be honest is to walk around and work out more.Instead of driving your gas guzzling suv 6 blocks down the road go ahead and save gas and take a brisk walk and get in shape. If you commute to work, try carpooling to save tons on gas.If you and a few others use one car to drive and split the cost with everyone that carpools with you that will add up greatly.

You can always trade in your 6 or 8 cylinder vehicle for a gas sipping 4 cylinder economy car. They can get mid 30's to 40 mpg on the highway and are very inexpensive to maintain.Always do regular tune ups and flush your fluids according to its maintenance schedule.A clean motor will save more gas than a car that has been using the same oil and filters for past 3000 miles.

One popular method that Americans are turning to save money on gasoline is to convert your car to run on a water/gas mixture.Water can be found anywhere and you can safely carry it with you on your vehicle.

Hybrid Cars - The Hottest New Trend In Transportation

Just how much longer do we have to continue to deal with ever increasing gas prices? Just how are we supposed to weather this storm of outrageously rising gas prices? Is it time for a new car? If getting a different car seems to be the best option, how do I know what kind of car to get? Maybe we should all take a look at hybrid cars.

Hybrid cars are one of the hottest things going these days. Hot colors, sleek styles, and less time and money spent at the gas pumps - that's what hybrid cars have to offer. Wow! Sounds great doesn't it? How could you not want to run right out and get one today? Maybe we should find out a bit more about hybrid cars before we run out and purchase one.

Hybrid cars are vehicles designed to run on electricity. A rechargeable energy storage system onboard the vehicle and a conventional propulsion system combine to give the vehicle better gas mileage than cars running on gasoline alone.

You don't have to plug in a hybrid car to charge its battery. Hybrid cars use something called regernative braking to create kinetic energy and charge the battery while you drive. Regenerative braking is used on hybrid gas/electric automobiles to recoup some of the energy lost during stopping. This energy is saved in a storage battery and used later to power the motor whenever the car is in electric mode. Furthermore, some hybrid cars make use of their own combustion engine to create electricity. This is done by using a spinning electrical generator. The spinning does one of two things. It can either recharge the battery or in a more direct way, it can give power to an electric motor. This motor is what then drives the vehicle.

Therefore, because this fuel-economizing vehicle can generate its own electricity, it is very different from a vehicle that is run strictly on batteries. Plus you won't have to sit around waiting for your car to charge before you can head out on your latest adventure. Just turn the key and head out.

The ability of hybrid cars to save lots of money of gas and the innovative way it powers itself have earned the hybrid car the title of car of the future. Most automakers and many consumers seem to agree on this fact. There seems to be an increasing interest in hybrid cars as more and more people purchase them as the years go by.

If you like what you've read about the hybrid car, maybe you should consider getting one.

It's hard to say how much longer the gas prices will continue to rise. If that's the case, you have another reason to think about purchasing a hybrid car. Head on down to the local hybrid dealer and ease the pain a little bit. It's a good investment and step towards the future.

URBAN CITY ☭ COOL CARS

URBAN CITY ☭ COOL CARS. An automobile or motor car is a wheeled motor vehicle used for transporting passengers, which also carries its own engine or motor. Most definitions of the term specify that automobiles are designed to run primarily on roads, to have seating for one to eight people, to typically have four wheels, and to be constructed principally for the transport of people rather than goods. However, the term automobile is far from precise, because there are many types of vehicles that do similar tasks. As of 2002, there were 590 million passenger cars worldwide (roughly one car per eleven people). Around the world, there were about 806 million cars and light trucks on the road in 2007; they burn over 260 billion gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel yearly. The numbers are increasing rapidly, especially in China and India. An auto show, or motorshow, is a public exhibition of current automobile models, debuts, concept cars, or out-of-production classics. It is commonly attended by automobile manufacturers. Most auto shows occur once or twice a year. They are vital to car manufacturers and local dealers as a public relations exercise, for advertising products, and for increasing publicity. There are other auto/car shows that occur on a more frequent basis, like weekly. It's not known if there is a regularly accepted term for these more frequent, informal "car rallies" or "car enthusiasts events". Some meeting events have themes, such as classic cars, hot rods, etc ...

Get Your Hands on a Piece of History With the Jaguar Collection

There is something distinctly British about the motoring firm Jaguar even though the company is now owned by the Tata motors ltd company in India they have attempted to keep the essence of what is a British motor car, the only problem with that is that the essence of what is a British motor car is always necessarily good. The motor trade in the UK has been dwindling for some time, what once used to be a keen nation of car builds has been reduced to almost nothing.

What has happened to the once proud Jaguar collection that used to snarl up the dual carriageways of the country? Well the answer to that question is quite possibly in museums around the country. The only place you will be likely to see a Jaguar collection these days is on a wildlife program on the television. Well ok that isn't strictly true, there are a number of events held annually where you can see an impressive Jaguar collection.

The cars are classic and were originally used by sales reps as they made their way up and down the highways of the United Kingdom, it was something that done the company more damage than good as sales reps tend not to be very good drivers. I'm sure most people have experienced being hounded down the road by a Jaguar back in the eighties.

Thankfully since then the brand has improved a lot and it has managed to remove the annoying element from their establishment and because of that the brand has become very popular again, so much so that the brand has managed to launch its only range of Jaguar collectives. The items called the Jaguar collection is available through the world wide web and can be found with a simple search through one of the many search engines.

The range includes lots of interesting and exciting items including hats, t-shirts, key rings, fragrances, mugs and teddy bears. There is literally something in there to satisfy everyone within the Jaguar collection and if some of these items are kept in pristine condition then they may be worth some money. We have all seen how collectors are keen to get hold of rare and precious car memorabilia.

It is nice to see that such a classic brand like Jaguar has bounced back to regain its mantle for some of the newer brands that had snuck up when it had its eyes closed, we can only hope that it continues to go from strength to strength and comes back to the head of the market.

A Hindi Course Can Benefit You Professionally

Are you interested in taking a Hindi course? You can gain a lot of benefits by doing so. Anyone interested in international business should be alert to opportunities in India. India is growing in importance in finance, technology and consumer goods. You may be interested in working with India because you want to hire professionals. On the other hand, you may be interested in working with India because you are seeking a new market for your consumer products. Either way, India is a tremendous resource for those interested in international commerce. And those people need to seriously consider taking a Hindi course.

India is just too important as a resource to ignore. Indians are working in finance, technology, medicine and other disciplines in their home countries and worldwide. Keeping abreast of those disciplines requires you to keep up with advances under development in India. From the nuclear bomb to IT, India continues to make news. It is a country full of talent that is striving to make their talents known.

But if India is an important resource, it is becoming an equally important market. The highly skilled professionals that are such a resource to American companies are merging into a burgeoning middle class. This middle class is clamoring for consumer goods, from cars to refrigerators. Just look at the global splash that was made when Tata Motors unveiled the Nano. The new urban middle class in India has purchasing power and they have wants and needs to be filled by material goods. What else could manufacturer of consumer goods hope for if they were interested in taking their company multi-national?

Now, one of India's two official languages is English. Most educated Indians speak English with considerable fluency. Consequently, many Americans think that they have no need to take a Hindi course because they can get by in English. That may be true. But consider your response if the roles were reversed. Would you prefer to enter into a joint venture to develop a green energy source with someone who thought all the accommodations for communications had to be made by you? Or would you choose a partnership with a professional who made the effort to speak to you in your native language?

It isn't necessary to become fluent in Hindi or to go on to study Hindi literature to have a positive impact with your use of the language. Learning some Hindi will allow you to converse with many people if you travel in India. Learning the Devanagari script will help you orient yourself to the written word in the country. And using some conversational Hindi will help you establish yourself as a fully prepared professional ready to do business in India.

The dynamic of the world is changing with India and China gaining prominence that they never had before. There is no indication that those trends will be reversed any time soon. Being able to speak some Hindi will be nothing but an asset for anyone interested in building professional relationships in India. So take a Hindi course, and reap the benefits.

2008 Trends in the Auto Industry

Well we have sure had a rocky year in the auto industry in 2008. The demand for Hybrids out paces the available Hybrids for sale by nearly a 10:1 margin, auto dealerships cannot keep them on the lots and the waiting lists look like a Santa Clause wish list from all the children of the World. Everyone has noticed the trend for smaller cars and we are seeing the first imports from China and India.

TaTa Motors has the Nano and China has their first dealerships opening now on US Soil. These vehicles are smaller more efficient and cost a lot less. GM and Ford are now offering longer Leases, but the car finance business is in dire straights as all those SUVs on lease are coming back and not nearly worth as much as their so-called book value. In fact, most dealerships do not even want the larger SUV trade-ins on their lots, because they will not sell.

GM and Ford market share has seen steady decreases in 2008, but over all; all car sales are off, fewer cars have been sold and Toyota and Honda that are outpacing GM and Ford by a mile have seen sales go down drastically. The recession is hitting hard in the auto industry and people keeping cars longer because budget wise they have no choice.

New materials and new technologies are on their way, but they will not get here soon enough for GM and Ford, as they make even bigger cuts. Hybrid cars cost a lot to build too, this means more complex systems and higher sticker prices, at a time when Americans are cutting back. And although, unemployment is on the rise slightly in the US, there are still huge shortages of auto mechanics and who is going to work on all these high-tech hybrids of the future? Scary stuff in the auto sector.

Mazda introduced rotary engine vehicles in the US since 1971, beginning with the R100, followed by RX-2, RX-3, RX-4, RX-5, and finally three generations of the RX-7 sports car. With the third generation RX-7, Mazda held nothing back and delivered a super high performance sports car with little compromise. The lack of creature comfort and user-friendliness, coupled with the high price tag and declining interest in sports cars and coupes at this time, led to Mazda pulling the RX-7 from most major markets except Japan. After 1995, Mazda suffered from a relatively undistinguished product line in the US save the MX-5 Miata. As popular interest in import tuning and performance cars resurged in the late 90's, thanks in part to various popular cultural influences such as the Sony PlayStation video game Gran ...
