India 2007 - Days 1 to 3 Delhi and Udaipur

Arriving in Delhi in March, the temperature was somewhat higher than in Europe at about 30°C, but surprisingly, not unpleasant due to the lack of humidity. As this was our third visit to Delhi, the hustle and bustle of humanity, the porters vying to push our luggage trolley and the general feeling of organized chaos, came as little of a surprise. However, there were some changes since our last visit. The drive into the city seemed to take much less time than previously, I think because the road had been widened in places and the extension of the metro system had reduced the traffic by a minuscule but noticeable amount.

In other respects, the journey was just the same; tuk tuks whizzing in and out of other traffic, hundreds of bicycles and motor scooters each with upwards of two passengers, overloaded buses and lorries and the ubiquitous Ambassador car. Nonetheless there are now far more other makes of private vehicle on the roads than before, Tata being a favourite, manufactured by the giant company formerly only known for its trucks, but now making affordable family cars as well as branching out into the telecoms business.

The welcome at our hotel was, as always in good Indian hotels, impeccable and we were soon ensconced in the bar with an ice cold Kingfisher beer and were soon deep in conversation with the incredibly well-educated barman about, amongst other things, Indian politics and the growth of international business in this part of the world.

Another Kingfisher in and we were a bit peckish, the effects of our Virgin Atlantic breakfast having worn off. The speciality here was Chinese cuisine so we opted for king prawns in a wonderful chilli and garlic sauce plus (more) prawns wrapped in crispy filo pastry and served with a delightful, light dipping sauce, slightly sweet and slightly spicy. But enough of Chinese food, after all, we are in India!

The same night we ate a tandoori chicken dish as well as spicy, very finely minced lamb patties. To accompany the meat, we chose a tarka dal (red lentils, spiced with cumin, garlic, ginger and chilli, to name but a few) served in tiny individual dishes, as is traditional, as well as light-as-air naan bread. To follow we had (rather unnecessarily, but my husband has a sweet tooth) Zauk-e-Shahi, which we were told translates as Dessert of the Royals and is a reduced milk, saffron and paneer (similar to cottage cheese) dumpling encrusted with poppy seeds. It was a truly wonderful meal, made so particularly by the friendliness of the waiting staff and their happiness at our interest in the food and how it was cooked. They were astounded to learn that we in the West, cook Indian food in our homes too!

On day two, after a breakfast buffet which catered to every possible taste and dietary requirement, we headed back to the airport and flew to Udaipur. As there was a lengthy check-in period and the flight was slightly delayed, I just had to try the samosas, which at less than one rupee for two (if my memory serves me correctly) was the bargain of the holiday. On top of that, they were very tasty and hardly greasy at all - pretty amazing for a fast-food snack in any country.

On arrival in Udaipur, we were once again struck by the bright colours worn by the Rajastani women - shocking pink, orange and yellow being predominant. Negotiating the narrow, winding streets, many of the shops were also festooned with the same rainbow-hued saris.

Our hotel was part of the City Palace complex, still partially occupied by the Maharana himself and its main attraction, apart from the palace itself, is its outdoor bar and restaurant set right at the edge of Lake Pichola, overlooking virtually the whole lake and in particular, the Lake Palace Hotel, famous for featuring in the James Bond film "Octopussy". The view from this terrace of the setting sun reflecting in the lake and the twinkling of the uplighting of the Lake Palace is really something to see, but on this particular evening, the thrall of the sunset was interrupted by first an elephant complete with howdah but no passengers, swiftly followed by a procession of various classic European sports cars and then a marching band. Apparently, the sports car drivers were on a tour of India and had been invited by the Maharana to a banquet. As a consequence, we too were treated to processions, music and fireworks far into the night.

Knowing that there would be less choice at some of our other destinations, we went the Chinese route for dinner which consisted of chicken fried in chilli sauce, crispy shredded mutton tossed in lemon, honey and chilli plus Sweet and Sour Vegetables - red and green pepper, cauliflower and peas, which, with egg fried rice, all went down very well.

The next morning was taken up with sightseeing - a drive around Lake Pichola, the Princes Garden and the City Palace, of which there is far too much of interest to describe here. Lunch was samosas and vegetable pakora, served with a chilli dip and washed down with more Kingfisher.

Following the obligatory sunset drink, for our dinner we chose Seekh Kebab (spiced minced lamb), Khumb Palak (mushrooms simmered in puréed spinach with herbs and spices), Dal Dhaba (green lentils with cumin, onion and tomato) and Tandoori Khatta Aloo (potato marinated in fermented yoghurt and aromatic Indian spices, cooked in a Tandoor). To mop all this up, we had Kulcha, which is a leavened flour bread stuffed with onion and green chilli, then fried - absolutely wonderful.... and so to bed!

In the next installment we'll be moving southeast through Rajastan - next stop Bijaypur.

Tata Nano - Car for the Commons

Ratan Tata has finally made it. The man, who dreamed big to make a small car has achieved it and gave the cynics a halt that predicted doom on the project. Major competitors wondered in awe, a feat they thought would remain in paper. However, as the expectations from the Indian middle classes soared, the opinions resonated with global sentiments on the need for an affordable car that would carry the common people. The light has ultimately shone with Tata Motors realizing the dream into reality.

Tata Motors unveiled the Tata 'Nano', the cheapest car in the world at the Delhi Auto Expo, which was held recently in the Indian Capital city. There were mixed reactions among the global manufacturers with some looking at it with envy and some dismissing it to be yet another gimmick only to say, "Let's see how long it lasts". International Automobile giant Volkswagen was all praises for the car. All emotions taken into account, it was a red-letter day for Tata Motors, which entered the annals of history for having released the world's cheapest car.

Ratan Tata drove the car to the podium amidst cheers and got down with a sense of satisfaction in his face. "A promise is a promise." Ratan Tata spoke these words, when reporters quizzed him how he could accomplish this task in the specified time with many price fluctuations in the meanwhile. Well, the Nano has been priced at US $2500, which by any means appeals to the masses and this is evident from the thronging of the public at Tata's marketing outlets. Despite many hurdles right from the politicization of the manufacturing facility at Singur, the car made its way to the public domain and was the cynosure of all eyes in the exhibition.

Technical Parameters

Nano is a two-cylinder driven car with an Engine capacity of 625 CC and a power of 33 BHP. The little wonder can travel up to 20 to 25 km per liter of petrol. The maximum speed it can cruise is 90 Km. The car is slated for release in Oct 2008 and comes in three colors viz. Red, Yellow and Silver.
Small it may look albeit; it has not compromised on road safety. Nano has passed the necessary rigors of testing such as the 'Full Frontal Crash', a test that determines the impact strength of a car. It has complied with Euro-4 emission norms for environmental qualification tests, which establishes that the car has undergone conventional checks required to ensure a smooth and safe plying on the roads.

People's sentiments

People in India have already started bee lining in the showrooms to book the Nano. The reasons are more than encouraging, as the difference in price between Nano and other cars is wide. It also has struck a good balance in pricing when compared to motor bikes. What else would people require, when a small family of four can travel with comfort in a car, which offers them luxury and a status that was once considered the choice of the privileged.

The adage 'Small is beautiful' fits very well for Tata Nano. The efforts by the 500-member team, which developed the Nano is by no means a nano effort, but certainly a mega one. Now the challenge rests with the government to widen the roads and provide proper infrastructure facilities for an efficient and safe plying of cars in general. This issue comes to the fore, since the fleet of cars will suddenly increase on roads due to advent of cheaper cars.

There will be stiff competition among car manufacturers and one would vie with the other by slashing prices to keep pace with the market needs and competitive pricing for customers. The game has started. Now it is up to the government to keep the roads as fit as a fiddle and for the manufacturers to bring down the prices for a sustained share of their market.

9 Simple & Easy Money Saving Tips Car Owners Need to Know

I am a big car and motorcycle enthusiast, I always will be. Everybody has a blood type and mine is 94 octane. I've been asked many times over the years about my opinion on certain cars, and been called upon as an expert to help many friends evaluate a used vehicle. I "get" cars, you need it to get to work, run your errands and sometimes put a smile on your face. Here's what I know about saving money with your car.

Pay attention and anticipate opportunities to take your foot off the gas.

After all you need to stop at some point. This does two things. Firstly most people don't know this but most cars made after 2005 have a fuel cut off system that kicks in when your foot comes off the gas pedal. What that means is even though you are in gear, and the engine is technically turning over while showing RPM's, fuel is not being burned. My car has a fuel economy gauge and when I take my foot off the gas it reads 0.0L/100km when I coast to a stop. Secondly you don't actually need to use your brakes as much since the engine is in gear and slowing you down anyways. That's going to make your braking system last longer.

Inflate your tires properly.

This is so simple yet people rarely do it. Rolling on under/over inflated tires uses more gas, and can wear them unevenly causing more frequent tire purchases. Check your tire pressure and do this at least 4 times a year. Refer to your manual and keep all tires inflated properly; I keep mine around 33PSI.

If your car only requires regular gas - use regular gas.

It blows me away when I fill up at the gas station and I see a guy with a $3,000 car putting in 94 octane. Why would you waste your money? That's dumb, the car won't perform any better and in fact the engine compression was designed to work with regular gas so you may be doing damage to your motor because it's harder to ignite. Despite what advertisers say, you don't get any more power or economy with high octane gas. Savings on a 55 litre tank on regular vs. premium fuel equals about $4 per tank. That's $208/yr if you fill up weekly. Save your money.

Replace your air filter

A dirty air filter restricts airflow in your engine; that can dramatically influence your fuel economy and performance of the motor. Air filters are cheap and easy to replace. Rule of thumb, take it out and hold it up to a light. If it's too dirty to see through, replace it. I check mine once a year.

Remove excess weight from your car.

Motor-sports has known this for years; weight is a killer for winning races. Weight slows fast lap times and eats fuel. More pit stops are required for fuel because of weight. Get rid of your junk collection in your trunk and passenger cabin and your fuel economy will improve. I went as far as removing a 55lb full size spare tire from my trunk. Less weight equals better acceleration and fuel savings

Slow down on the highway

This is where you usually get your best fuel economy, but so many people are doing 130km/hr or more on the highway just burning through fuel. Air resistance is the big killer here. Remember when you were a kid and put your hands out the window on the highway and felt that pressure pushing your hand back? Picture that pressure all over the car, the faster your go the more fuel you need to push the car down the road. Slowing down and doing 100-110km/hr can improve your economy considerably. You can actually get your best fuel economy doing about 80km/hr cruising on country roads.

Buy inexpensive tires

I recently got a price quote for some new tires and they ranged from $590 to $1,470 for a set of 4 new tires installed. After doing some research I found the set of $610 Sumitomo tires were well rated and are made by a Dunlop factory. They drive very well and I saved a ton of money. Don't buy high-performance tires for your car.

Stop putting big silly looking big wheels on your car.

It blows me away when I see people driving cars with these big 22" wheels. Who are you trying to impress anyways? The guy or girl waiting next to you at the stoplight? You will never meet them again after you drive away. Save your money, your car already has wheels on it. Also switching from your factory wheels and moving up to larger wheels adds considerable unsprung weight to the car. A recent test showed that moving from a 16" wheel to a 20" wheel degrades acceleration, braking, handling and fuel economy all by about 25%. Stop the madness and save your money.

Stop burning rubber.

Nobody really cares if you have a faster car, really. Trust me even if you are in a Ferrari, somebody has something faster. Accelerating rapidly off the line is pointless, can get you a speeding ticket and is awful for your fuel economy. You aren't driving a top fuel funny car and if you are, take it to the dragstip.

Don't worry if your friends think you are cheap, these tips are guaranteed to save you money if you drive a car. As my accountant says "Cars are a colossal waste of money". For years I resisted this concept, but the truth hurts sometimes.

Sector Overview: Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs)

The image and even the mythology of road transport is inextricably linked to the largest and heaviest vehicles on the road - hardly surprising given their size and visibility relative to other vehicles. But in terms of production and sales, large commercial vehicles (CVs) are far outnumbered by smaller vehicles, and consequently, their economic importance to the global motor industry is not as great as it is for smaller vehicles. John Kendall looks at the light commercial vehicle (LCV) sector.

These smaller vehicles are known by a series of names - vans, cargo vans and light commercial vehicles (LCVs), to pick out a few.

In itself, that causes a problem to start with. LCV means different things in different parts of the world, since there is no agreed global definition of size or weight. We focus on vehicles weighing less than 3,500kg (7,716lb) GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight), the loose definition adopted in the European Union. In EU terms, these vehicles are defined as licence category B, under Directive 91/439/EEC, Article 3. just-auto shall adopt this weight since it will cover the majority of vehicle types recognised as LCVs around the world.

Body types include microvans, car-derived vans (CDVs), which are effectively passenger cars converted to carry light loads, purpose-built vans, chassis and double-cab variants of these, designed to accommodate varying types of bodywork such as dropside, tipper, car transporter and box van, as well as pickup trucks.

As has been indicated, LCVs are to an extent, defined by national driver licensing requirements. Across the European Union for instance, the 3,500kg GVW limit is the maximum weight of vehicle that new drivers are permitted to drive.

They may also be defined in other ways by national and international trade bodies. France, as an example, tends to classify LCVs as those below 5,000kg (11,023lb) GVW in statistics compiled by the Comite des Constructeurs Francais d'Automobiles (CCFA). The same definition is used in some production statistics compiled by OICA (Organisation Internationale Des Constructeurs D'automobiles). Unfortunately, OICA is not consistent and some figures record LCVs as those below 6 tons (6,096kg) GVW.

While the EU-wide licence categories offer a fairly clear definition of an LCV, the current licence categories for vehicles were instituted in 1997 and many member states still permit drivers licensed before that date to drive vehicles in heavier weight categories ('grandfather rights'). Consequently, it will be many years yet before all car licence holders are restricted from driving commercial vehicles without taking additional driving tests. This still influences vehicle-purchasing behaviour in those countries and is likely to do so for some time to come.

Generally, the US takes a more liberal attitude to car licence holders. In many US States, holders of category C licences - the licence held by many car drivers - permit them to drive vehicles up to 26,000lb (11,793kg) GVW. There is some degree of variation, State-to-State, but overall this is a widely agreed limit. Not surprisingly, US cargo vans can be heavier than our self-imposed 3,500kg GVW limit, so this report exercises some flexibility in the definition when dealing with the US. Sectors such as the low cab forward (LCF) market in the US could be seen in the same light as the LCV sector in other parts of the world. LCF models are generally heavier than 3,500kg GVW, but some discussion of them in this report is justified in the overall context of the US light vehicle market.

It is also true to say that many European models within the 3,500kg GVW limit are also produced at heavier weights, satisfying the limited demand for such vehicles that can still be driven by older passenger car licence holders.

Market overview

Since many LCV models share driveline and body components with volume passenger car models, it naturally follows that the dominant global passenger car manufacturers are also the leading LCV players. At one time, many more models were based on passenger cars than is the case today, but Europe has seen a reverse trend in recent years, where passenger car versions of LCV models have become more popular, as LCV chassis dynamics, comfort, and noise levels have made a marked improvement. Such models used to be popular primarily in France, Spain and Italy, where the family car also doubled as business transport, but now their market appeal has spread north across Europe as these models have moved upmarket.

Global market players include DaimlerChrysler, Fiat, Ford, General Motors, Hyundai/Kia, PSA, Renault/Nissan, Toyota and Volkswagen, who all produce LCV ranges. In addition to these, there are many other specialist manufacturers satisfying the needs of their local markets.

In the fast moving Chinese market, Zhanjiang Kingstar Vehicle Trading Co of Guangdong province is one of the leading producers, with a product range partly based on Toyota panel vans and pickups. Other co-operative ventures are also in place to produce European and Japanese models in China.

Hyundai/Kia is the dominant player in Korea and like some Japanese producers, builds a specific model for the European market. In India, the Tata Group is the leading LCV producer with a model range based partly on old Mercedes-Benz models. We will consider individual manufacturers in a later section.

In general terms, LCV products can be split into a number of categories by size and weight. Some are specific to certain markets, although continuing rationalisation and globalisation is producing a more uniform global pattern.

Key trends: 1. Japanese OEMs' role in Europe to increase in importance

The European LCV market is relatively robust, and does not see the same cyclical demand patterns as witnessed with either passenger car or heavy commercial vehicles. This stability is of benefit to those suppliers with forward investment decisions to make, but, conversely, it renders the marketplace quite static in comparison with other sectors. just-auto regards the Japanese OEMs as likely to play an increasingly important role within Europe, and would point to Toyota as being the manufacturer most poised to benefit from this trend.

Key trends: 2. Consumer confidence will be key factor for NAFTA's lifestyle sector

NAFTA has seen a marked substitution effect at work, with traditional car buyers now opting for one of the growing number of lifestyle-designed LCVs. The development of this lifestyle sector is - numerically - a good thing, but, at another level, it renders the genre liable to peaks and troughs in consumer as well as business demand. Whilst we accept that these two are linked, the increasing 'consumerisation' of the LCV market in NAFTA may prove to be a double-edged sword; rising interest rates and falling consumer confidence may well serve to take the shine off what is otherwise a buoyant market sector.

Key trends: 3. Diesel growth will be more significant than alternative fuels

NAFTA is also likely to witness a growing interest in diesel powered LCVs. The recently renewed CAFE requirements will make large capacity gasoline engines a difficult legislative pitch, and just-auto regards the growth of diesel as being of far greater significance than that of alternative fuels during the life of this report. This may well serve the interests of the Japanese OEMs - already a reckonable force in North America - and may well cause the indigenous OEMs to play a game of catch up.

Key trends: 4. China's growth to slow but its - and India's - exports to grow

just-auto's views of the emerging markets are perhaps unfashionable. We view the Chinese market with some concern; on the one hand, IP and fiscal issues make China a difficult place in which to do business. On the other, it seems unlikely that the levels of growth witnessed to date can be sustained over the long term. The Indian market seems to have developed further than that in China, and we expect to see the development of a global player - in Tata - over the life of this report. Both China and India boast a domestic vehicle sector, and we regard an export driven approach from both markets as being a safe bet. Latin America is developing a regional self-sufficiency in terms of vehicle production, driven in part by long-term investments on the part of European OEMs. This is a trend that we expect to see remaining constant, although the sourcing of LCV components from Mercosur on the part of European OEMs would seem an entirely logical move.

Key trends 5: Quality of local fuel supplies may be key to emerging markets' OEMs' success

Perhaps key to the development of the emerging markets is the availability of a high quality fuel supply. There is little benefit to be gained by existing emerged market OEMs producing products that are inappropriate for the fuel supply available to the end user in the emerging markets. The costs implicit in desulphurising the global fuel supply are huge, and just-auto remains unconvinced that refinery capacity in high growth areas such as China will be sufficient to allow for this program to occur without hiccups. If the emerged markets-based OEMs continue to produce a variety of different engines for different markets, there will surely be a large strain placed upon their resources, resulting in a shift back to the existing OEMs - such as Tata and FAW - both of which may prove better placed to serve demand from the emerging markets.

Police Auctions

It is surprisingly common for federal, state and local governments, as well as banks and other lending institutions to find themselves in possession of automobiles and other motor vehicles, boats, land, real estate and other property. In the case of government this occurs because property is confiscated from criminals, or in some cases, from people who default on their taxes. In the case of banks and financial institutions, the situation usually arises because a debtor is unable to keep on their payments, and hence the lender repossesses the property.

Additionally, government agencies, for example the police, often have fleets of vehicles. These vehicles are periodically retired and replacement by newer models, and hence the question of what to do with the retired vehicles arises.

Neither government, nor banks, usually have much interest in continuing to own these vehicles, whether they are confiscated or seized, repossessed, or simply retired. Additionally, vehicles are expensive to store, and do of course depreciate in value over time. Quick sale, often achieved by auctioning these vehicles to the public, is therefore often in the government's or bank's best interest.

Vehicle auctions of these types may include automobiles, SUVs, vans, trucks and even motorcycles. If you spend some time investigating these auctions, you might be surprised at the bargains that you can find! Seized cars can of course be of pretty much any make or model, and will vary widely in condition - so be sure to know what you're bidding on! Don't dismiss, retired ex-government service vehicles, as these can sometimes represent very good value - they may have clocked up a lot of miles, but they are usually well maintained, and often have full service records too.

Electric Vehicle Plans - Start Your DIY Electric Car Conversion With Proper Guides

If you are an electric car enthusiast, you will be considering retrofitting your gasoline driven gas car into an electric vehicle on your own. Before you do so, it is recommended for you to get some electric vehicle plans. You do not want to start a DIY electric conversion project without a road map. Generally, an electric vehicle blueprint will show you the entire electric connection diagram.

In an electric car retrofitting process, what we are doing is to remove the internal combustion engine and all its associated components such as gas tank, radiator, fuel pump and fuel distribution lines and replacing them with a DC electric motor and batteries. You will need a minimum of 20 batteries to supply the power needed for the electric motor. The existing drive train such as the transmission, clutch system and drive shaft can still be utilized. One thing you have to figure out is how to place all the batteries pack. Most probably you have to construct a custom metal rack to hold the batteries in place.

An electric car with a full charge is capable of traveling about 150 miles. The actual mileage will depend on the weight of the car, the driving condition, the speed of the car and also the condition of the batteries. If you were to install more batteries, you would extend the mileage of the electric vehicle. However, additional batteries will add more dead weight on the car thus affecting its breaking and steering system. It is a good idea to go for a balanced system.

If you are not familiar with automotive engineering, all the information above may not make any sense to you. In this case, if you still want to enjoy the benefits of an electric car, you can send it to a mechanic to be retrofitted. What you should do is to understand some basic knowledge of the conversion process. This is to safeguard you from being charge for unnecessary parts and work done. There are many electric car conversion guides that you can purchase from the internet.

Guru Cracks Code on How to Save Money on Gasoline

The gas prices are out of this world! Many families cant afford last years gas prices and now with gas prices exceeding 5.00 in many cities families are forced to cut back and live frugal. There is hardly any cities left that have gas prices for less than 4.00 a gallon. It costs Americans tons of money to fill up there economy cars.

What can be done to save money on gasoline now? There's no immediate simple answer to address this. One method to be honest is to walk around and work out more.Instead of driving your gas guzzling suv 6 blocks down the road go ahead and save gas and take a brisk walk and get in shape. If you commute to work, try carpooling to save tons on gas.If you and a few others use one car to drive and split the cost with everyone that carpools with you that will add up greatly.

You can always trade in your 6 or 8 cylinder vehicle for a gas sipping 4 cylinder economy car. They can get mid 30's to 40 mpg on the highway and are very inexpensive to maintain.Always do regular tune ups and flush your fluids according to its maintenance schedule.A clean motor will save more gas than a car that has been using the same oil and filters for past 3000 miles.

One popular method that Americans are turning to save money on gasoline is to convert your car to run on a water/gas mixture.Water can be found anywhere and you can safely carry it with you on your vehicle.

Hybrid Cars - The Hottest New Trend In Transportation

Just how much longer do we have to continue to deal with ever increasing gas prices? Just how are we supposed to weather this storm of outrageously rising gas prices? Is it time for a new car? If getting a different car seems to be the best option, how do I know what kind of car to get? Maybe we should all take a look at hybrid cars.

Hybrid cars are one of the hottest things going these days. Hot colors, sleek styles, and less time and money spent at the gas pumps - that's what hybrid cars have to offer. Wow! Sounds great doesn't it? How could you not want to run right out and get one today? Maybe we should find out a bit more about hybrid cars before we run out and purchase one.

Hybrid cars are vehicles designed to run on electricity. A rechargeable energy storage system onboard the vehicle and a conventional propulsion system combine to give the vehicle better gas mileage than cars running on gasoline alone.

You don't have to plug in a hybrid car to charge its battery. Hybrid cars use something called regernative braking to create kinetic energy and charge the battery while you drive. Regenerative braking is used on hybrid gas/electric automobiles to recoup some of the energy lost during stopping. This energy is saved in a storage battery and used later to power the motor whenever the car is in electric mode. Furthermore, some hybrid cars make use of their own combustion engine to create electricity. This is done by using a spinning electrical generator. The spinning does one of two things. It can either recharge the battery or in a more direct way, it can give power to an electric motor. This motor is what then drives the vehicle.

Therefore, because this fuel-economizing vehicle can generate its own electricity, it is very different from a vehicle that is run strictly on batteries. Plus you won't have to sit around waiting for your car to charge before you can head out on your latest adventure. Just turn the key and head out.

The ability of hybrid cars to save lots of money of gas and the innovative way it powers itself have earned the hybrid car the title of car of the future. Most automakers and many consumers seem to agree on this fact. There seems to be an increasing interest in hybrid cars as more and more people purchase them as the years go by.

If you like what you've read about the hybrid car, maybe you should consider getting one.

It's hard to say how much longer the gas prices will continue to rise. If that's the case, you have another reason to think about purchasing a hybrid car. Head on down to the local hybrid dealer and ease the pain a little bit. It's a good investment and step towards the future.

URBAN CITY ☭ COOL CARS

URBAN CITY ☭ COOL CARS. An automobile or motor car is a wheeled motor vehicle used for transporting passengers, which also carries its own engine or motor. Most definitions of the term specify that automobiles are designed to run primarily on roads, to have seating for one to eight people, to typically have four wheels, and to be constructed principally for the transport of people rather than goods. However, the term automobile is far from precise, because there are many types of vehicles that do similar tasks. As of 2002, there were 590 million passenger cars worldwide (roughly one car per eleven people). Around the world, there were about 806 million cars and light trucks on the road in 2007; they burn over 260 billion gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel yearly. The numbers are increasing rapidly, especially in China and India. An auto show, or motorshow, is a public exhibition of current automobile models, debuts, concept cars, or out-of-production classics. It is commonly attended by automobile manufacturers. Most auto shows occur once or twice a year. They are vital to car manufacturers and local dealers as a public relations exercise, for advertising products, and for increasing publicity. There are other auto/car shows that occur on a more frequent basis, like weekly. It's not known if there is a regularly accepted term for these more frequent, informal "car rallies" or "car enthusiasts events". Some meeting events have themes, such as classic cars, hot rods, etc ...

Get Your Hands on a Piece of History With the Jaguar Collection

There is something distinctly British about the motoring firm Jaguar even though the company is now owned by the Tata motors ltd company in India they have attempted to keep the essence of what is a British motor car, the only problem with that is that the essence of what is a British motor car is always necessarily good. The motor trade in the UK has been dwindling for some time, what once used to be a keen nation of car builds has been reduced to almost nothing.

What has happened to the once proud Jaguar collection that used to snarl up the dual carriageways of the country? Well the answer to that question is quite possibly in museums around the country. The only place you will be likely to see a Jaguar collection these days is on a wildlife program on the television. Well ok that isn't strictly true, there are a number of events held annually where you can see an impressive Jaguar collection.

The cars are classic and were originally used by sales reps as they made their way up and down the highways of the United Kingdom, it was something that done the company more damage than good as sales reps tend not to be very good drivers. I'm sure most people have experienced being hounded down the road by a Jaguar back in the eighties.

Thankfully since then the brand has improved a lot and it has managed to remove the annoying element from their establishment and because of that the brand has become very popular again, so much so that the brand has managed to launch its only range of Jaguar collectives. The items called the Jaguar collection is available through the world wide web and can be found with a simple search through one of the many search engines.

The range includes lots of interesting and exciting items including hats, t-shirts, key rings, fragrances, mugs and teddy bears. There is literally something in there to satisfy everyone within the Jaguar collection and if some of these items are kept in pristine condition then they may be worth some money. We have all seen how collectors are keen to get hold of rare and precious car memorabilia.

It is nice to see that such a classic brand like Jaguar has bounced back to regain its mantle for some of the newer brands that had snuck up when it had its eyes closed, we can only hope that it continues to go from strength to strength and comes back to the head of the market.

A Hindi Course Can Benefit You Professionally

Are you interested in taking a Hindi course? You can gain a lot of benefits by doing so. Anyone interested in international business should be alert to opportunities in India. India is growing in importance in finance, technology and consumer goods. You may be interested in working with India because you want to hire professionals. On the other hand, you may be interested in working with India because you are seeking a new market for your consumer products. Either way, India is a tremendous resource for those interested in international commerce. And those people need to seriously consider taking a Hindi course.

India is just too important as a resource to ignore. Indians are working in finance, technology, medicine and other disciplines in their home countries and worldwide. Keeping abreast of those disciplines requires you to keep up with advances under development in India. From the nuclear bomb to IT, India continues to make news. It is a country full of talent that is striving to make their talents known.

But if India is an important resource, it is becoming an equally important market. The highly skilled professionals that are such a resource to American companies are merging into a burgeoning middle class. This middle class is clamoring for consumer goods, from cars to refrigerators. Just look at the global splash that was made when Tata Motors unveiled the Nano. The new urban middle class in India has purchasing power and they have wants and needs to be filled by material goods. What else could manufacturer of consumer goods hope for if they were interested in taking their company multi-national?

Now, one of India's two official languages is English. Most educated Indians speak English with considerable fluency. Consequently, many Americans think that they have no need to take a Hindi course because they can get by in English. That may be true. But consider your response if the roles were reversed. Would you prefer to enter into a joint venture to develop a green energy source with someone who thought all the accommodations for communications had to be made by you? Or would you choose a partnership with a professional who made the effort to speak to you in your native language?

It isn't necessary to become fluent in Hindi or to go on to study Hindi literature to have a positive impact with your use of the language. Learning some Hindi will allow you to converse with many people if you travel in India. Learning the Devanagari script will help you orient yourself to the written word in the country. And using some conversational Hindi will help you establish yourself as a fully prepared professional ready to do business in India.

The dynamic of the world is changing with India and China gaining prominence that they never had before. There is no indication that those trends will be reversed any time soon. Being able to speak some Hindi will be nothing but an asset for anyone interested in building professional relationships in India. So take a Hindi course, and reap the benefits.

2008 Trends in the Auto Industry

Well we have sure had a rocky year in the auto industry in 2008. The demand for Hybrids out paces the available Hybrids for sale by nearly a 10:1 margin, auto dealerships cannot keep them on the lots and the waiting lists look like a Santa Clause wish list from all the children of the World. Everyone has noticed the trend for smaller cars and we are seeing the first imports from China and India.

TaTa Motors has the Nano and China has their first dealerships opening now on US Soil. These vehicles are smaller more efficient and cost a lot less. GM and Ford are now offering longer Leases, but the car finance business is in dire straights as all those SUVs on lease are coming back and not nearly worth as much as their so-called book value. In fact, most dealerships do not even want the larger SUV trade-ins on their lots, because they will not sell.

GM and Ford market share has seen steady decreases in 2008, but over all; all car sales are off, fewer cars have been sold and Toyota and Honda that are outpacing GM and Ford by a mile have seen sales go down drastically. The recession is hitting hard in the auto industry and people keeping cars longer because budget wise they have no choice.

New materials and new technologies are on their way, but they will not get here soon enough for GM and Ford, as they make even bigger cuts. Hybrid cars cost a lot to build too, this means more complex systems and higher sticker prices, at a time when Americans are cutting back. And although, unemployment is on the rise slightly in the US, there are still huge shortages of auto mechanics and who is going to work on all these high-tech hybrids of the future? Scary stuff in the auto sector.

Ele utiliza o motor rotativo Wankel. The Mazda RX-8 is a sports car manufactured by Mazda Motor Corporation. It first appeared in 2001 at the North American International Auto Show. It is the successor to the RX-7 and, like its predecessors in the RX range, it is powered by a rotary engine. The RX-8 began North American sales in the 2004 model year. Mazda introduced rotary engine vehicles in the US since 1971, beginning with the R100, followed by RX-2, RX-3, RX-4, RX-5, and finally three generations of the RX-7 sports car. With the third generation RX-7, Mazda held nothing back and delivered a super high performance sports car with little compromise. The lack of creature comfort and user-friendliness, coupled with the high price tag and declining interest in sports cars and coupes at this time, led to Mazda pulling the RX-7 from most major markets except Japan. After 1995, Mazda suffered from a relatively undistinguished product line in the US save the MX-5 Miata. As popular interest in import tuning and performance cars resurged in the late 90's, thanks in part to various popular cultural influences such as the Sony PlayStation video game Gran ...

History of Ford

The Ford Motor Company has been manufacturing cars since the early 1900s after its founder, Henry Ford, incorporated the company on June 16, 1903. Ford is the fourth largest vehicle maker in the world based on worldwide sales. They trail Toyota, General Motors and Volkswagon. The company is located in Dearborn, Michigan just outside of Detroit. Aside from their brands of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury, Ford also has international models in Sweden called Volvo and Mazda of Japan. They were once a part owner of Aston Martin in England. They sold their part ownerships of Jaguar and Land Rover to TaTa in India in March of 2008.

Ford is the third largest manufacturer in the United States in terms of sales behind GM and Toyota. It was the first time in 56 consecutive years that Ford had fallen from the number two largest manufacturer in the country. Henry Ford revolutionized the manufacturing world with his large-scale assembly line designs and how he treated his industrial workforce. His model for success became known globally as Fordism. The company has stayed within the Ford family for over 100 years.

Over the past few years the Ford Motor Company has struggled to make a profit and needed a new plan to revitalize the company. Company chairman Bill Ford requested a plan from Mark Fields, the president of the American Division. The plan was released to the public in 2006 and it was titled "The Way Forward." This plan did consist of major layoffs across the company and it resulted in the consolidation of production lines, the closing of 14 factories and cutting 30,000 jobs.

Ford has been one of the many motor vehicle manufacturing companies that has moved into producing hybrid cars and fuel flexible cars. Their fuel flexible cars are the Ford F-150, the Crown Victoria, the Focus, the Taurus, the Ranger, the Explorer, the Mercury Grand Marquis, and the Lincoln Town Car. Their hybrid vehicles have been produced every couple of years from 2004 to 2009. In 2004 the company released its Ford Escape Hybrid. In 2006 the company released its Mercury Mariner Hybrid, in 2008 the company released its Ford Fusion/Mercury Milan Hybrid and in 2009 it released the 2009 Ford Edge/Lincoln MKX Hybrid.

Ford, aside from manufacturing vehicles for everyday use, is also a major player in three of NASCAR's races. They manufacture cars for the Sprint Cup Series, the Nationwide Series and the Craftsman Truck Series. Their Ford F-150 is used in the Craftsman Truck Series and the mid-size Fusion is used in the Sprint Cup Series and the Nationwide Series.

One of the most popular and recognizable Ford cars is their ultimate sports car; the Ford Mustang. The Mustang was first manufactured in 1964 and released that same year at the New York World's Fair. The vehicle is modeled after the Ford Falcon, one of the company's compact cars. There are five generations of the Mustang, the fifth one beginning in 2005 and continuing into the present. The Mustang, not only the company's most popular car, is the company's most successful model as well.

Nissan To Invade Low-Cost Auto Market

The Nissan Motor Co., Japan's third-largest auto manufacturer, is designing a $2,500 car to compete in India with the low-cost model planned by the Tata Motors Ltd, Chief Executive Officer Carlos Ghosn said. "We are working on how we can make a car for $2,500," Ghosn told reporters at a dinner in Versailles, France. A Nissan advance engineering group is doing the study, he added.

Automakers are moving quickly to trail Renault SA's footsteps by offering cheaper models for the fast growing markets in Asia, the Middle East and South America. The second-largest automaker in France that owns 44 percent of Nissan will be rolling out its no-frills Logan sedan in Argentina, Brazil, India and Iran. Ghosn heads both Renault and Nissan. Tata, India's third-biggest car maker, plans to sell a car priced at about $2,500 by the year 2008.

According to government estimates, India's car market may triple to 3mn vehicles a year by 2015. "In India one competitor has announced a car for next year at $2,500,'' Ghosn said. "I take that challenge very seriously." The Nissan CEO already had said in April that the company intends to sell cars in India for less than $3,000.

The Japanese automaker seeks to win business from auto rivals including the Suzuki Motor Corp, whose Maruti Udyog Ltd unit commands a 50 percent market share in India. The Nissan Motor India Private, Ltd also contributes towards social activities with all the employees. The company distributes uniforms and stationeries to schools affected by the recent floods in Mumbai.

"If you ask any car manufacturer if they can make money on a car that costs $2,500, the answer is always going to be no,'' Ghosn noted. "Until somebody does it.'' The Tokyo-based automaker said April 26 that its profit decline 46 percent to 82.2bn yen in the quarter ending March 31 on weak American sales.

In connection with Nissan's struggle to alleviate its sales, it will be introducing its next-generation Maxima, which is said to be a true 4DSC (short for 4-Door Sports Car). The new vehicle is not only equipped with the peculiar Nissan clutch master cylinder. This is because the automaker's pool of engineers has made the new Maxima more mature and luxurious.

A Nissan insider described the new vehicle as, "Unlike anything we've ever done before." The new Maxima will be more aggressive than ever and will flaunt a coupe-like shape, likened to the Mercedes-Benz CLS. The car will also slot from the Z and the upcoming GT-R to strengthen links to the performance machines. Aside from the legendary VQ-series engine, the new Maxima will also feature Nissan's brand new Alliance turbodiesel engine.

The automaker is sending the new Maxima with high hopes. Its striking performance and affordable price could put it back on track. The bolder and high-performance Nissan Altima is set to arrive in 2009.

Nissan will also be releasing the 2007 model year 350Z in Australia. The vehicle is equipped with a more powerful, next-generation engine, revised exterior styling and new exterior color palette. At the heart of the 2007 model year 350Z is Nissan's award winning next generation engine - the designated VQ35HR.

Nissan Australia's managing director and chief executive officer, Shinya Hannya, commented on the update to the company's halo model in the range: "The changes are designed to not only improve on the performance of the 350Z but build on its reputation as one of our best performance sports car."

Separately, the Japanese automaker is happy to announce that its hybrid may continue to claim the Alternative Motor Vehicle Credit. This fact is attested by the Internal Revenue Service. The said announcement came after the IRS concluded its quarterly review of the number of hybrid vehicles sold.

To note, Nissan sold 2,094 qualifying vehicles to retail dealers in the quarter ending March 31, 2007. The allowable credit amount for the 2007 Altima Hybrid, the automaker's only certified hybrid vehicle, is $2,350. Taxpayers may claim the full amount of the allowable credit up to the end of the first calendar quarter after the quarter in which the manufacturer records its sale of the 60,000th vehicle.

Investing in Coimbatore Real Estate, a Safe Bet!

Coimbatore, the textile and engineering city of India is the second-largest city of Tamil Nadu next to Chennai. It is one of the principal cities of the state that is immensely popular for both historical legacy and industrial heritage. Coimbatore has seen tremendous economic growth in past few years that has sky-rocketed its real estate sector as well.

'Manchester of South India', Coimbatore is known for its extensive textile industry, mills and factories, automobile parts manufacturing and engineering firms. These industries supply a voluminous two-third of India's requirement of electric motors and pumps. Education and manufacturing industry have been the vital elements for growth of this city which is to continue even in the coming years. Since, there are a large number of reputed colleges and educational institutions, the demand for real estate in Coimbatore is always on a higher side. The need for residential spaces like apartments, flats or even hostels has been growing, thus, weaving opportunities for real estate developers and investors. It has been observed among trends followed by investors that they buy big buildings and convert them into a hostel that fetches them high returns readily.

Coimbatore, being a textile and industrial hub already has started attracting attention from various global companies and MNCs. Gandhipuram, Town Hall and Avinashi Road are some of the favourite commercial property preference for these companies. It has some of the best properties available in economical prices as the government is now shouldering the responsibility of promoting it as an upcoming Coimbatore property destination. The Government of Tamil Nadu has slashed down the property rates to encourage investors from other cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, etc. to consider pumping in money in Coimbatore also.

Also, it has superb connectivity in form of a modern airport, well-developed network of broad gauge railway, six arterial roads, and three highways. The service industry i.e. IT and ITes is developing at a staggering pace with coming in of corporate giants like Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Cognizant, BT Infoserve, Ephronsys, Robert Bosch, Nous Infosystems, CG-Vak Software, Quattro, Pricol, Spheris and Sharp etc. Software Technology Parks, IT Special Economic Zones (SEZ) and IT parks by Presidium Constructions, Bannari Amman Group, Salzer Group, Span Ventures and KG Group are also to be developed in the city soon.

Coimbatore is also called the 'Poor Man's Ooty' in regard to its pleasant and salubrious climate throughout the year. The great climatic conditions of the city have also become a source of attraction for many. Another sobriquet associated with Coimbatore is of the 'Motor Sports Capital of India' as motor sports play a very important role in the identity of this city. It is considered as a 'Backyard of Indian Sports' being the motor racing hub of the country.
The boom in Coimbatore real estate has led to its emergence as a city offering high-standard lifestyle.

The demand for property in Coimbatore has been witnessing a considerable rise leading to escalation in real estate investments. Both the residential and commercial properties of the city are selling like hotcakes which imply an increase in sales and revenue as well as in employment opportunities. This 'city of entrepreneurs' is, in fact, the highest revenue-earning district of the state of Tamil Nadu.

The property prices are definitely going to shoot up much further and reap positive benefits in the future. Coimbatore is surely a safe bet as a real estate investment destination with bright prospects and high potential shown. It has become a new cynosure that is set to generate limitless opportunities by opening high profit generating avenues in form of real estate.

India Beat China as Next Great Bull Market

India has the potential to be the next great bull market of the 21st century - an opportunity of being a better investment than even China!

Like China, India was stuck with a failed economic system for over 50 years. It was a bureaucratic, socialistic state that led to weak growth, and stymied entrepreneurship and initiative. Famines, lack of investment, and poverty were the result.

But In the early 1990's, the country changed course and started to open up its economy to the world. Personal marginal tax rates have fallen from 50% to less than 30%. Tariffs and import quotas were slashed, exports are growing at a 20% annual rate, with America being its largest market. Only 10% of its economy is dependent on international trade, insulating it somewhat from external shocks. The banking system is much improved, and non-performing loans have dropped to less than 4% of total bank loans. It has fiscal crisis to accumulating $135 billion in foreign exchange reserves.

Here are six reasons that investors should consider tilting some of their long-term capital towards India and not China.

Unlike China, India is a functioning democracy with respect for property rights and the rule of law. China's authoritarian state may have the advantage at making quicker decisions and pushing through economic reforms but without democratic political reform it will eventually hit a speed bump the size of the Great China Wall. India's multi-party parliamentary system with its obstructionist bureaucracy is far from ideal but at least the daily speed bumps on the road to market reform can be overcome.

India is a natural ally of the U.S. as it emerges on the global stage and plays classic balance of power politics. America's relationship with China will at best be wary and tense. The fact that many Indian citizens speak English is also a significant advantage both commercially and politically.

China's state-owned companies have staying power but government ownership will limit their growth and potential. Foreign governments will be suspicious of their intentions and likely consider them as an extension of the Chinese government. State ownership will also lead to inefficiencies and an inability to hold onto top management talent.

India's capital markets are better than China's. India's stock market was established in 1870 and has 6,000 publicly-traded companies and a more modern financial and banking system that allocates capital fairly well. Only 10% of bank credit in China goes to private companies. India has 100 companies with a market cap over $1 billion.

India is a very youthful nation with 50% of its population under 25 years of age. This leads to less strain on its national budget and the hope that the younger generation will drag the bureaucracy and politicians to swifter implementation of market reforms. China's one-child policy has backfired leading to an aging population which will lead to manpower shortages and tremendous pressure on its national budget. 20% of Shanghai residents are over 60 years old and by 2020, one-third of Shanghai's population of 13.5 million will be over 60.

India has a more balanced and sustainable economy with 64% of its GDP attributable to consumer spending and 50% of its GDP from service sector. China's economy is more dependent on foreign investment, exports and resources. India's 250 million living in poverty is a tragedy but it's middle class has quadrupled during the past two decades to reach 250 million as well.

For sure India has its challenges: big infrastructure needs, frustrating red tape and a tendency for the government to hang on to large state-owned enterprises to mention a few. It has recently suspended its privatization program, has high levels of public debt, very poor basic services such as elementary education, water and health, rigid labor laws, and still lacks the consensus that exists in China for welcoming foreign investment and placing a high priority on economic growth. India's infrastructure such as roads, power and ports is also in desperate need for investment. This is one area that China is way ahead of India. The other is China's ability to attract roughly ten times as much foreign direct investment.

India's economy is doing well but is still below its potential. Just think if India embraced foreign investment, privatization, had the political will to improve the lives of workers in agriculture by consolidating farms and using more technology to vastly improve productivity. If it can provide its citizens with quality basic education and other services and put in place adequate power and other infrastructure, it can create 100 million new jobs in industry and manufacturing.

Still, compared to China, India does not get much attention except for the outsourcing issue and is - for now - largely under the radar screen of even sophisticated investors. After a strong start this year, India's 30 company Bombay Sensitive Index (Sensex) index was beaten down more than 20% but has recovered to be flat for the year.

The challenge with investing in India right now is valuations of the leading companies and the limited investment options. Valuations may be getting a bit ahead of themselves with SENSEX companies trading at around 17-18 times next year's earning projections versus 13 times for emerging markets as a whole.

The Morgan Stanley India Fund (IIF) is a closed-end fund that invests in India's blue chips trading at $42, quite a bit off its 52-week high of $57. It is a bit pricey right now and trades at a 17 % premium to net asset value so caution is recommended until this premium comes down to the historical average in the low single digits. I would make only a modest allocation at this point. There are also some Indian ADRs trading on U.S. exchanges and these are also expensive and trade at a price premium over the India market price. My favorites are Dr. Reddy's Laboratories (RDY), HDFC Bank (HDB) and Tata Motors (TTM).

Be patient - there no doubt will be great investment opportunities as well as new investment vehicles to take advantage of this great secular bull market.
India presents investors with the opportunity of a lifetime and its democratic government, stronger financial system, market-based interest rates and history of respecting property and intellectual rights may make it a better long-term play than China.

Mudras & Hand Symbolism: Hand Mysteries? Part 3

[Note: This paper contains images which may be seen as originally published at our website]

In ceremonial magick of the Western Tradition, the hands and fingers are used for various purposes among which is to trace symbols, sigils, and signs in a consecrated space or object. They are also utilized to banish, invoke and direct forces to certain targets. In contrast to the adepts of ceremonial magic, stage magicians apply the hands to entertain audiences with their many illusory tricks. They call this, "prestidigitation," or "sleight of hand." In prestidigitation, the hands are used in various ways to deceive and mislead the eyes, and also in guiding the mental focus of the audience. The saying that "the hands are quicker than the eye," is a well-known cliché used by stage magicians.

While still on the topic of entertainment, we have to consider the applause. The clapping of hands in modern usage is an expression of delight, agreement, an accompaniment to music, or appreciation for someone's stage performance. Metaphysically, it is said that ovation dispels the presence of angelic beings. These creatures of light dislike the vibrations produced by the applause. From the occult point of view, therefore, clapping is regarded as a negative practice.

In dance, gestures of the hands are essential in conveying or expressing symbolic messages and metaphorical meanings. They possess a rich vocabulary and tell non-verbal stories that evoke our primordial emotions as well as divine sensations. This can easily be seen and experienced in the hula-dance of the Polynesians. These dances and hand movements narrate various myths of the land that transports us to another world. In Hindu classical texts regarding dance, hundreds of hand gestures are mentioned, together with descriptions of the thirteen positions of the head, thirty-six of the eyes, and nine of the neck. In the Hindu dances based on the Carnatic music composition, the following mudras are used among many others: Raaga mudra, Tata mudra, Aachaarya mudra, Naayaka mudra, Vamsa mudra, Biruda mudra, Lakshana Grantha mudra, Prabandha mudra, Sthala mudra, etc.

Although the many poses of the hands in traditional dance may portray symbolical meanings, they are also functional in the sense that they modify the morphogenic or auric field of the human organism, and likewise meant to regulate the energy flow within the etheric body.

There are numerous forms of dance or dancing style prompted by the various levels of the psyche. Basically, we can classify three types of dance originating from the subconsciousness, consciousness and the superconsciousness. The instinctive or primitive dance originating from the subconsciousness is well known and is displayed by both man and beast. Most of these movements and their awkward gestures usually are mating courtship dances and the release of pent-up energies. Cultural dances evolved from these unrefined movements. They are a projection of what the psyche understands of beauty, grace, form, rhythm, etc. The third category may be called mystical dances. They originate from higher levels of consciousness beyond the reach of the conscious mind, but whose energies may be channeled through the physical body producing divine movements. Some forms of dancing are the amalgamation of all three classifications. The traditional dancing styles of Eastern countries such as India, Thailand, and Indonesia are typical of these. In these dances mudras are often formed to alter the consciousness of the dancer and indirectly affect the consciousness of the spectators. About 16 years ago the writer personally witnessed one of the traditional Javanese dances performed by a very talented young man. The dance was called "Kesadaran," or "Consciousness." We were spellbound from start to finish.

Music often make us move and sway our hands, feet, and body unconsciously. Why does it do this? For the simply reason that musical energies have the power to possess our beings and cause an altered state of awareness making us lose a certain degree of control over our physical motor system. All beings are susceptible to the influence of music. Animals and plants are especially vulnerable. In Greek myth we often hear tales of Pan, the personification of Nature, dancing to the mystical tunes of his pan-pipes, and all those who heard him play would also join in the fun, the mirth, and the merry-making. Similarly, when the Greek sage Orpheus played on his lyre, all became entranced, even the rocks listened attentively.

In the Hindu tales of the gods, as found in the Bhagavata-Purana and the Gita-Govinda, Krishna is said to have enchanted the gopis, or shepherdesses of Vrindavana with his lila dance and magical flute-playing. Each gopi was so mesmerized and distracted by Krishna that they would forget everything else around them. They would become so one-pointed that they would believe that they were the only one present before their Lord. Evidently, music has the power to cause ecstatic feelings.

The god Shiva is often portrayed in iconography in a dancing pose as Nataraja, or "Lord of Dance." Representing the Consciousness aspect of Nature, why does Shiva engage in a Cosmic dance? It is because Shakti or divine energy, flows through his being and causes spasms and convulsions at first, and then rhythmic movements in attunement with the beat of the Cosmos. Amidst spiritual flames, Shiva dances rapturously, burning and transmuting all of the old outworn forms of life hindering cosmic progress.

In a microcosmic scale, a Shiva-dance likewise occurs to a practitioner of mudras. Spontaneous dancing may transpire as a result of the awakening of the life-force in the lowest psychospiritual center of the etheric body. While conducting the mudras the practitioner's whole being would often move involuntarily. The physical body might sway forward and backward, left and right or rotate on its axis. His or her hands would move on their own accord in circles, in arches, in figure-eights, in a chopping upward-downward movement, or oscillate in a left-right or forward-backward direction; sometimes the hands are mysteriously placed at various layers of the aura, or even at certain focus points--at the chakras or energy centers of the body. While Shakti is active, she may also induce the practitioner to assume unlearnt mudras. The energies invoked through mudras have an intelligence all of their own and they do their work through movements. They know what to do to balance, purify, transform, or integrate celestial energies into the microcosmic system.

In the martial-arts field, hands are used as weapons of defense or destruction. The "Tiger's Claw," the "Iron Fist," "the Drunken-style Fist," etc, all indicate the manifold lethal forms that the hands may assume to strike an opponent or to ward off blows. In contrast to this, the finer arts make use of the hands constructively and creatively to produce wondrous objects of art, and to compose and produce heavenly music. Like the Cosmic dance of Shiva, the movements of Tai Chi, Pencak Silat, and other forms of self-defense have part of their origin in an awakened source of energy moving through the limbs producing involuntary movements. These movements were later noted down and turned into the various steps of martial-art discipline and training.

Some systems of metaphysical development teach us to move the body in a certain way. Though this has an effect in stimulating energies in the body it is not quite as effective in producing the desired results as when compared to the assuming of mudras that cause the energies to produce natural movements all of their own accord.

When we clasp our hands by interlacing our fingers, the thumb at the uppermost, whether right or left indicates which hemisphere of our brain predominates. Psychology tells us that if the right thumb is uppermost it is logic or reason that is predominant within us, or if the left thumb, intuition.

The hands play an important role in empowering the mind to function optimally. Since energy radiates from the palms and fingertips, they are often unconsciously utilized as stimulators re-connecting lost or poor links between synapses of brain neurons. In the book Body Magic, an important work on esoteric man, Benjamin Walker describes how the operations of the hands often attempt to improve the mental processes by certain placements:

"When the fingertips of the two hands are placed together, a circuit is set up with the brain that is believed to assist thought. People in deep thought will often talk with their fingertips pressed together, as if unconsciously aware of the need to establish such a current to assist their concentration. If a man wishes to recall something he has forgotten, his hand will instinctively touch his forehead to contact with his fingers the source of his thinking."

From what has been written thus far, it is evident that hands play a prominent role in everyday life. This can also be seen in the way we have invented all sorts of idioms regarding them. For instance, "lend me a hand," "hands-off," "hand-in-hand," "old-hand," "hands-on," etc.

The Application of Hands in the Spiritual Path

In the Spiritual Path hands are used for the following purposes:

As an instrument of healing.

As an instrument of blessing and consecration.

As an instrument of general service.

As an instrument of teaching.

As an instrument of purification, invocation, prayer, and communion.

**********

As an instrument of healing

Chakras, or energy-centers are to be found all over the body. There is a chakra to be found in each palm of the hand. There is likewise a minor chakra at every fingertip. The size, activity, and power of these chakras are dependent upon various factors. One of these is the purity of the subtle channels terminating at those chakra points. These subtle channels or etheric nadis convey the life-force all over the body and may be projected outside of the body through the hand chakras. Healers of various metaphysical traditions make use of the hands to convey healing energy or to break up toxic crystals imbedded in the tissues. Since ancient times Chinese doctors have been diagnosing a person's state of vitality through sensing the strength of the energy radiating from the hands, from the phalanges of the fingers, and the pulse at the wrist. Among the many systems of alternative therapeutics that make use of the hands are acupressure, Shiatsu, Chakra healing, Reiki, Rosicrucian Contact healing, Body Electronics, various forms of massage work, etc. Like Jesus the Christ, every Initiate on the Spiritual Path is essentially a healer, though he may not blatantly proclaim or advertise himself to be one. When circumstances and necessity calls for it he would gladly offer his services to the suffering one, always stressing, however, that it is not he that works, but the "Father " within him.

As an instrument of blessing and consecration

Metaphysics teaches and proves through various experiments which may be personally verified by skeptics that energy radiates from the hands. This energy may be used to magnetize objects, places, spaces or people for various purposes. The religious term for magnetization is consecration. Blessing is a form of consecration. It refers to the magnetization of a human being rather than an object with a spiritual force. Generally, in the act of consecration or blessing we seek to raise the vibrations or frequency of a person or an object, or to empower it with certain energies that would turn it into a psycho-spiritual generator that would influence its immediate surroundings in a certain way. Thought-forms imbued with mental suggestions and emotional power are often attached to these blessings. Curses operate much in the same way as blessings, they however, bring about negative effects. The curse on Tutankhamen's tomb is a classic example of this.

Where people are concern in the act of blessing, the metaphysical practitioner would also seek to clear obstructive or congested energies preventing the person from being aware of or communing with his or her Higher Self. Once this purification is achieved the person would possess a clearer line of communication with his hidden god or genius and acquire a stronger sense of protection, faith, and a constant guidance from the Most High.

In the act of blessing or consecration, the hands work in harmony with the power of the spoken word to modify the magnetic-field structure of people and objects.

As an instrument of general service

The hands are tools of service and humanitarian aid. Spiritually and socially, it is applied in extending a helping hand to our fellow beings, to those in need of bare necessities, comfort and solace. In spiritual teachings, karma yoga is often associated with the hands in active giving without any thought of remuneration or recognition. This is a vital principle. The desire to serve humanity must come from the heart without any thought of self or ego. Selflessness, self-sacrifice, and active service are important virtues that the spiritual aspirant has to embody and express at every breathing moment. When self-comfort, self-importance, and self-aggrandizement are the sole motives of help to others then the hands are misapplied and any act carried-out is unmeritorious. Spiritual disciples should not attract attention to the fact that they are serving. The best service is done quietly in the shadows without any fanfare or advertisements. The Master Jesus explained it concisely in this manner: "Do not let the left hand know what the right hand is doing." Occultly, the left hand is used for receiving energies, while the right hand is employed for giving them.

As an instrument of teaching

Spiritual Gurus teach in various ways. They give teachings orally, in writing, telepathically, through example, symbols, drama, and by the use of gestures. The hands can convey lots of information when knowledgeably used. Symbolic movements of the hands may portray the workings of Cosmic laws and spiritual principles. It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Sometimes the hands may tell what the mouth cannot. A loving touch tells something that words are often unequipped to. In Zen Buddhism, the Guru often gives shock treatments to his students with the use of the hands. A rap on the head or a slap on the face at the appropriate moment and psychological condition after intense meditation is supposed to cause a student to suddenly apperceive the natural state of his mind and thereby become enlighten.

As an instrument of purification, invocation, prayer and communion

Perhaps the most common use of hands in religious and in metaphysical spiritual work is its application in prayer. Basically, this does not require any specialized knowledge. The hands are instinctively used when appealing to God, to higher intelligences for intercession or when used simply as gestures of adoration or reverence, just as we instinctively scratch our foreheads or pull our beards when we seek to arouse our mental powers. The hands may be clasped, outstretched or assumed in any other way that the heart dictates while in silent prayer. Esoteric teachings, however, teaches various mudras, or hand gestures that have specific purposes for the invocation of cosmic forces and spiritual beings. The liturgical formula "The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, Amen" in the Christian Tradition accompanied with the touching of the appropriate points of the head and body at the conclusion of a prayer conveys a certain power to the etheric body when correctly done. However, the perfunctory manner in which it is performed provides very little of worth. In Hinduism, such placing of the hands upon certain parts of the body with magical intent is called Nyasa.

To commune with the divinity within us we may apply various mudras that facilitates mystical communion. Mudras establishes a psychic condition in the mind and body that temporary elevates our consciousness, and disperses the etheric webs that protects the psyche from being prematurely bombarded by psychic/celestial energies. It aligns and unites our objective consciousness with the superconscious mind. An altered state of consciousness is easily achieved through the use of the hands in the performing of mudras. Through mudras our communion with the so-called supernatural is controlled. We open and close the portals to higher worlds through the application of our will.

In ceremonial magick the hands are extensively used to direct and build up forces in one's sacred place of worship and practice. Symbols are drawn on the ground or in the air with the power radiating from the hands and chakras to invoke and evoke cosmic metaphysical forces. The avatar Sai Baba is often seen making gestures in the air. He does this for the purpose of dispersing and cleansing the ambient surroundings and atmosphere from negative energies. The metaphysical practitioner or ceremonial magician makes use of the hands in manifesting certain things and conditions.

To conclude this article we would like to praise the hands for what they offer us--the opportunity to grow and serve. The fingers and thumbs of the hands should not quarrel among themselves as to who is the greatest, as related in some ancient fables, for they all have their place in supporting the need in us to further pursue our dreams, in fulfilling our earthly tasks and cosmic mission. The harmonious conjoined functioning of the fingers and thumbs of the hands is a metaphor for the right relationship and cooperation between the sons of men to manifest the Will of God, just as the fingers and hands manifests the will of its possessor. The noblest use of our hands is to extend it in friendship, in kindness and in unconditional love.
